Competition Research & Analysis

When we talk about your web site's competitors, we are referring to those websites that are ranking high in the keywords that describe your product or service, and those websites that are doing well on related search engine results pages. If you want to market your website effectively on the Internet, you will need to know who is already doing this successfully, and most importantly, why.

Web River Group employs a team of competition research specialists whose sole function is to figure out why your competitors are ranking higher the search engines, making more sales, or bringing on more clients than you are. Once we can understand why your competition is successful, we can create a plan to make your website successful too.

Our competition research and analysis campaigns involve analyzing everything about top websites in your market, including content, keywords, graphic design, link strength, navigation, customer service and sales technique, and using that information to make your website the best and most authoritative in your field. By knowing what the search engines like about your competitors, we can figure out what they don't like about you.

If you'd like to take a stab at conducting your own competition research and analysis campaign, please follow some of the free guidelines below and contact us if we can assist you in any way.

  1. Find your top five to ten online competitors. This will include anyone who ranks high under your targeted keywords on major search engines, such as Google or Yahoo, anyone who dominates organic or sponsored listings on SERPs, and anyone who successfully sells your product or service online.

  2. Take time to research their overall web presence. This will include participating in their ordering process, subscribing to their email newsletters, joining their blogs or forums, testing their customer service departments, and keeping an eye on their search engine placement.

  3. Compare your findings. If there are certain techniques that four out of five of your main competitors use, such as daily updated content, product specials, featured listings or hours of operation, then most likely those techniques are search engine or visitor friendly and should be implemented on your site as well.

  4. Make your analysis ongoing. Believe us, your competitors know you're out there. The reason they can maintain a successful website is because they keep their eyes on who is creeping up to take their place, and make changes accordingly. If you succeed in overtaking your competition, then sit back and relax, they will figure out what they need to do to get back on top. That is the nature of competition.
